HAROLD ROE, naturalist, sportsman, hunter, world traveler, architect, art director, navy man, has become a rich combination of these elements. A keen observer, and intuitive thinker, and most importantly a sensitive artist, Harold embraces the natural world with the same wonderment he possessed as a young child growing up on a Wood County, Ohio farm.

Educated as an architect, he practiced as a principal in his own firm. In 1967 he became art director of the nationally recognized architectural illustration firm of Howard Associates, Inc. and maintained an architectural studio specializing in residential design until retiring in 1995.

In 1973, Harold became inspired by the beauty and free spirit possessed by birds. He focused his talents on recording their unusual characteristics in accurately detailed paintings that bring a rich flavor to the intimate details of the habitat and personality of the wildlife he illustrates.

Among his many honors, he has been invited to exhibit in the "Birds in Art" show of Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. The museum's annual exhibit features the finest bird art currently produced in the western hemisphere.

Accepted for exhibit at the national Wildlife Art Show, Harold was featured artist in 1990, and won best of show ten consecutive years. In 1994 and 1996 he won the coveted Peer award at the Northern Wildlife Art Exhibition, where he received the judges excellence award five consecutive years.

Harold is a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. which named him their International Artist of the Year in 1985 and again in 1998. This organization has raised in excess of 17 million dollars through the sale of his prints, with proceeds going for wildlife habitat conservation. Additionally, he has been a National Flyway Artist four times, a National Stamp Artist twice, the National Sponsor Artist three times, and State Sponsor Artist for seven states, including Ohio, an aggregate total of 26 times. Furthermore, he is the only four-time winner in the Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp competition and has been a finalist many times in the federal duck stamp competition, placing second in 2007.

For his art research, Harold has traveled to Alaska, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.  Harold's studio is located in Sylvania, Ohio.
